The story follows the cynical green ogre, Shrek, who just wants to be left alone in his swamp. However, his peace is disrupted when a group of fairy tale creatures, banished from the land of Duloc by the diminutive Lord Farquaad, take refuge in his swamp. Shrek makes a deal with Farquaad: if he rescues Princess Fiona from a dragon-guarded castle, Farquaad will give the fairy tale creatures their homes back and return the swamp to Shrek. Along the way, Shrek befriends a talking Donkey and discovers that Princess Fiona has a secret that changes things. The musical emphasizes themes of self-acceptance, friendship, and inner beauty!
